ICELAND AS A GOLFING DESTINATION?

Might Iceland be one of golf's most well-kept secrets?

When you think of Iceland, and all of the things that you can do here, teeing off might be one of the last things that you arrive at.

This is understandable. For many, Iceland is seen as a cold and harsh Arctic country and not necessarily somewhere that you would associate with golf.

Whilst the golfing season is indeed relatively short in Iceland, from late May to September, it is a popular pastime for many locals, and there are some unique benefits of planning a golf trip to this volcanic island.

ICELAND'S GOLF COURSES

Avid, passionate, and well-travelled golfers might be used to the rolling greens of the prestigious Gleneagles, the historical 'Old Course' at St. Andrews, or the dramatic, coastal Pebble Beach links or Cypress Point Club in California.

However, golf courses in Iceland offer a very different experience. With captivating sea and mountain views, and courses built into ancient lava fields, Iceland is arguably one of the most unique golfing destinations in the world.

Not only does this make Iceland a very tempting prospect for your golfing calendar, but during the summer months, the sun does not really set, offering the chance to tee off at midnight.

Although most of Iceland's 60+ golf courses are 9-holes, there are several 18-hole options close to the capital city and elsewhere in the countryside.

The tiny island of Grímsey off the north coast of Iceland offers a highly unique golfing experience. Whilst the course is only three holes, it offers the rare opportunity to boast at the clubhouse that you went golfing at the Arctic Circle.
